Clonal age and the proportion of defective progeny after autogamy in Patamecium aurelia.

چکیده
The relation of mortality and the proportion of progeny with reduced fission after autogamy to the clonal age in Paramecium aurelia was investigated. This relation is not linear but the proportion of defective progeny in creases stepwise. The observations are in agreement with those expected from the calculations of the number of deleterious mutations in the micronucleus.

Inheritance of Mutational Changes Induced by Radiation in Paramecium Aurelia.
N a previous paper KIMBALL (1949) has described the induction by radiation I of changes in vigor in Paramecium aurelia which first expressed themselves in the exautogamous progeny of rayed animals. In that paper, it was assumed that the changes were due to mutations in the micronucleus. This paper will present the genetic evidence which bears on this assumption. The radiation studies suggested ...
متن کاملAge-correlated changes in expression of micronuclear damage and repair in Paramecium tetraurelia.
In Paramecium, age is defined as the number of mitotic divisions which have elapsed since the previous cross-fertilization (conjugation) or self-fertilization (autogamy). As the mitotic interval between fertilizations increases, the percentage of nonviable progeny clones increases. In the current study, resolution of conflicting previous reports on the pattern of increase of death and reduced v...
متن کاملFactors determining the frequency of the killer trait within populations of the Paramecium aurelia complex.
The factors maintaining the cytoplasmically inherited killer trait in populations of Paramecium tetraurelia and Paramecium biaurelia were examined using, in part, computer simulation. Frequency of the K and k alleles, infection and loss of the endosymbionts, recombination during conjugation and autogamy, cytoplasmic exchange and natural selection were incorporated in a model. Infection during c...
متن کاملDetermination and inheritance of mating type in Paramecium aurelia, syngen 5.
ATING type inheritance in Paramecium aurelia is an important example of permanent nuclear differentiation. The relevance of nuclear differentiation to the general problem of gene action and development has often been noted (e.g., see SONNEBORN 1960). Briefly, the study of mating type determination in P. aurelia (and other ciliates) has provided models of the limitation of genic potentiality and...
متن کاملRNA-mediated programming of developmental genome rearrangements in Paramecium tetraurelia.
The germ line genome of ciliates is extensively rearranged during development of the somatic macronucleus. Numerous sequences are eliminated, while others are amplified to a high ploidy level. In the Paramecium aurelia group of species, transformation of the maternal macronucleus with transgenes at high copy numbers can induce the deletion of homologous genes in sexual progeny, when a new macro...
